Thanks for all the suggestions. After checking everything else I pulled the crankcase cover. The main starter idler gear is missing a tooth, which isn't so bad, but a chunk of the aluminum case got torn out where the secondary idler gear shaft sits.
So I suspect what I have here is a parts bike. Installing a new left side crankcase is probably going to be out of the question cost-wise. I guess there's no chance that chunk of aluminum could be welded back on?
